SEELEY D. KINNE
Seeley D. Kinne was born December 30, 1858 in New York state in the town of Onondaga and the county of Onondaga. His father was Gilbert M. Kinne ( born 1837) and Gilbert was a farmer in Onondaga county. His mother was born in Vermont and her maiden name was Miss Ethelinda Post (she was born in 1838, a year following her husband). It was sometime after Ethel's birth, that the family moved to Onondaga County, New York.
Seeley D., who was the eldest child, had the following brothers and sisters: Louie B. (brother - 2 years younger than Seeley and also born in New York), Emma A.(b.Aug. 27, 1863 in New York - d.June 9, 1951 in Sonoma, Ca.), Cleveland S. (brother - 6 years younger and born in Illinois), Cornelie (sister - 10 years younger & born in Illinois), Grace R. (b. March 22, 1871 in Illinois - d. January 24, 1966 in Everett, Washington. She married a Mr. Lindsey.), and possibly lastly Birtie (brother - 17 years younger than Seeley and born in Illinois. [It is from Grace's death certificate and the 1860 census from Onondaga NY and the 1880 Census from Illinois, Township of Padau and county of McLean; that most of this information has been pieced together.]
On November 17, 1881, Seeley D. Kinne was married to Ann M. Pollock in Illinois. They had at least 3 children: 1. Lillia Blanche Kinne (who married a Rambo), 2. Gilbert N. Kinne, & 3. Mary F. Kinne. Ann M. (Pollock) Kinne passed away around 1899.
In 1901 Seeley Kinne was married a second time in Illinois to Miss Rosina Stahly. Their children appear to have been: David G. Kinne(y) and Eric Kinne(y) . She passed away May 17, 1911 in St. Louis, Missouri. (Rosina was born in LcLean Co., Ill. On August 1, 1869. She was the daughter of Johann Stahly / 1827-1900 and of Rose Marie Stahli / 1833-1899.) In Kinne’s hymnal: “Songs Spiritual,” Rosa S. Kinne is mentioned as writing a hymn or two.
Thirdly, Mr. Kinne was married to a Beatrice S. ____. (B.S. Kinne is also listed as a hymn writer in “Songs Spiritual.”) They resided in Bloomington, Illinois. (Three childred are listed in the 1920 Census: Mary F. Kinne, age 25; David G. Kinne, age 14; and Eric Kinne, age 12.) Seeley & Beatrice then lived for a time in Avoca, New York boarding at the Gilbert's residence on Church Street. They were member of the Pentecostal assembly in Avoca where Br. Kinne spoke often. Following this time in Avoca, Br. & Sr. Kinne resided in Eureka, Ark. It was there where Beatrice Kinne remained during much of Seeley D.’s later travels throughout America. She was listed as living there at his passing. There were five children mentioned in Seeley Kinne’s obituary. Those listed were: L. Blanche (who lived in Sonoma, Ca.), Gilbert (who lived in Sonoma, Ca.), Mary F. (who lived in LeRoy, Ill.), and Alford (who lived in Orange, N.J.).
It was in the Spring of 1930 that Ivan Q. & Minnie Spencer, founders of Elim Bible Training School, met brother Kinne at sister Ella Moon’s church in Knoxville, Pennsylvania. It was during this time that the Kinnes were living in Avoca, New York as the 1930 US Census shows. They were boarders at the home of Karl E. & Ivy M. Gilbert on Church Street in Avoca. (The Gilbert children were Della A. & Alice I.) Beginning with the 1930 Elim Summer Campmeeting and continuing through the mid 1940’s Seeley Kinne was a regular Campmeeting speaker. He was known to his students and friends at Elim Bible school in Hornell, N.Y. as “Seeley D.” Also beginning in 1930 Seeley D. spoke regularly at the French sister’s church in Avoca, N.Y. Then in the late 30’s and early 40’s the Avoca church, which was then pastured by Arthur Stanton (Elim grad of ’35) continued to have brother Kinne minister. Brother Kinne affectionately called pastor Art Stanton, his Timothy.
In November of 1932, Seeley D. was found pastoring the Adullum Assembly at 404 South Avenue in Rochester, N.Y. He wrote to Elim at that time, “Some regard us as fanatical, we are the clearest of excessive and disorderly workings that I have seen, so as to be free from bondages of almost every kind. True we have dancing, singing, praising, and various spiritual exercises. To an onlooker that might seem boisterous; but to participate is to find the touch of God.”
“Recently a blue cloud of glory has been seen in the upper part of the hall, which seems similar to the appearance at the dedication of the Tabernacle (in the Wilderness) and the Temple (of Solomon).”
“It is said that we do not have two meetings alike. There is always something new and fresh. Sometimes we have a meeting in which exhortation follows exhortation almost exclusively. On another occasion prophetic utterances predominate. At other times a meeting will be characterized by impressive testimonies, while on still another occasion there is a mighty stream of prayer in the Spirit, which occupies the time wholly.” (See Elim Pentecostal Herald 1/33)
Kinne remained in Rochester as pastor until he resigned in July 1933 at the direction of the Lord. At the Elim Campmeeting then in Hornell, NY in July he along with several others was prophetically commissioned by the Lord and sent out traveling as an ambassador of the King and by the Church of God.
The writing entitled “Intervention in the Ecclesia” was written by Seeley D. during 1936 and printed by Elim Print Shop in 1937. Intervention was the last part (parts #4 & #5) of a series that the Lord spoke eleven years earlier to Bro. Kinne to write entitled “The Church” #1, #2, & #3. (See EPH 4/37)
When Seeley D. Kinne went to the West coast in 1944, he settled in the home of his daughter, Blanche Kinne Rambo for the last 6 years of his life. He passed into the presence of our Lord on April 13, 1950 at 91 years of age and is buried at Mountain cemetery in Sonoma, Ca .
His obituary in the Sonoma Index-Tribune reads as follows: Seeley D. Kinne was a retired Pentecostal minister living at the home of his daughter in Sonoma. The daughter is Mrs. Blanche Rambo. Other survivors include his wife, Beatrice in Eureka Springs, Arkansas; four other children and two sisters. He lived at the Rambo home here is Sonoma for the past 6 years. He died on April 13, 1950 at 7am after a short illness.
About Seeley Kinne
Wade E Taylor
Seeley D. Kinne was born in 1858 in New York State. He grew up on his parent’s farm and was the eldest of seven children. Seeley lived with his wife and family for a time in Avoca, New York, boarding at the Gilbert’s residence on Church Street. They were members of the Pentecostal Assembly in Avoca, where he often spoke.
In November of 1932, Seeley pastured the Adullum Assembly in Rochester, New York when He wrote:
“Some regard us as fanatical. We are the clearest of excessive and disorderly workings that I have seen, so as to be free from bondages of almost every kind. True, we have dancing, singing, praising, and various spiritual exercises. To an onlooker that might seem boisterous; but to participate is to find the touch of God.”

Kinne remained in Rochester as pastor until he resigned in July 1933 at the direction of the Lord. Seeley D. Kinne went to the West coast in 1944, where he lived in the home of his daughter for the last 6 years of his life. He passed into the presence of our Lord in 1950 at 91 years of age.
Seeley Kinne was a prophetic seer, who “saw” and had understanding far beyond the time in which he lived. During his life, he wrote many books, and articles. Edited excerpts from his writings are being made available here, as they are a “present word” to those who desire to go beyond that which is presently available.
He had a unique way to express eternal truth, which will both bless and edify those who read herein.
